Female football referee suffers concussion amid male players’ melee

A female football referee was injured during a friendly match in eastern France when she was struck while intervening in a confrontation between opposing players. Mathilde Demoncay, 26, was officiating the game between Metz and Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when the incident occurred during the 40th minute.

Tension escalated after a shirt-tugging incident prompted two players to confront each other. The disagreement quickly escalated as additional players joined the confrontation. As Demoncay moved to restore order, she was knocked to the ground in the melee and struck her head, sustaining a concussion.

Medical personnel, security staff, and assistant referees rushed onto the pitch to address the situation and assess Demoncay's condition. She remained on the ground for several minutes before being attended to. Despite the injury, Demoncay initially continued in an assistant referee capacity after play resumed, though she left the field at half-time and was replaced by another assistant.

Fortuna Sittard, which lost the match 3-1, described the episode as a "remarkable moment" in their match report but offered no further commentary. Metz did not publish any account of the incident on their website. The confrontation occurred directly in front of a large sign bearing the message "Respect the referee."
