Tour de France final stage shortened as emergency teams tackle wildfires

The Tour de France organizers have modified the event's concluding stage in response to widespread wildfires affecting France and Spain. The final stage, traditionally held in Paris, has been reduced in distance and altered in route to accommodate the redeployment of security personnel to emergency response operations. According to the Amaury Sport Organisation, which manages the tour, the Ministry of the Interior determined that internal security forces initially assigned to protect the final stage needed to be redirected to support wildfire containment and population protection efforts in affected regions. The shortened stage will now commence on the Champs-Elysees rather than in Thoiry, west of Paris, and will cover 89 kilometers instead of the original 133 kilometers. The revised route maintains the traditional finish along the Champs-Elysees, incorporating two additional circuits before proceeding to the Montmartre climb, a venue that has gained popularity following its use in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Montmartre area provides capacity for large spectator gatherings. The wildfires have displaced more than 267,000 residents across France and Spain, prompting the closure of Bordeaux airport and government warnings against travel to affected areas. Earlier during the race, spectators were similarly asked to avoid the final 40 kilometers of stage 3 due to wildfire-related security concerns. Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar is positioned to secure a record-equalling fifth Tour de France victory following his dominant performance throughout the three-week competition.
