Carlos Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has withdrawn from the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 event scheduled for August 13–23 due to a wrist injury, according to tournament director Bob Moran. The withdrawal casts uncertainty over the Spanish player's readiness to defend his US Open title, which he won last year after claiming the Cincinnati crown.
Alcaraz has been absent from competitive play since withdrawing from the Barcelona Open in April during his recovery from the wrist issue. He missed both the French Open and Wimbledon championships while continuing rehabilitation, though recent training videos suggested he was nearing a return to competition.
The timing of the Cincinnati withdrawal leaves limited preparation time before the US Open. The Winston-Salem Open, beginning August 23, would be Alcaraz's final opportunity to gain match experience before the major championship, though he has not yet confirmed his participation in that ATP 250 event.
Alcaraz began 2024 by winning the Australian Open, becoming the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam. In his absence from recent tournaments, world number one Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon title and increased his major championship count to five.
