Pakistan and Uganda athletes ‘missing’ after Commonwealth Games
Scottish police are investigating reports of athletes from Uganda and Pakistan who failed to return home after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Police Scotland has launched an investigation into reports of foreign athletes unaccounted for following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The missing athletes have been identified in media reports as boxers from Uganda and Pakistan who did not return home after the competition ended.
Uganda's NBS Sport reported that four members of the country's six-boxer team disappeared ahead of the scheduled return flight on Tuesday. One of the missing athletes reportedly indicated to the broadcaster an intention to seek asylum. Pakistan's media outlets reported that one of the country's boxers also failed to appear for a scheduled flight home on the same day.
Police Scotland stated that enquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances surrounding the missing athletes and that early engagement is taking place with the Home Office. The investigation reflects a pattern observed at recent Commonwealth Games hosted in Australia and Britain since 2014.
Previous editions of the Games have witnessed similar incidents. Following the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, authorities continued searching for 50 athletes and officials more than a month after the competition concluded, while an additional 190 individuals sought asylum. The Glasgow Games drew approximately 3,000 athletes representing 74 nations across 11 days of competition.
