Egypt’s Mohamed Salah looks set to swap Liverpool for Turkiye’s Trabzonspor
Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah is in advanced transfer negotiations with Turkish club Trabzonspor after leaving Liverpool. Trabzonspor chairman stated Salah was expected to arrive in Istanbul for medical checks on Wednesday, with contract signing anticipated Thursday. Salah, 34, departs Liverpool after nine years and 257 goals in 442 appearances.
Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor announced on Tuesday that transfer negotiations have commenced with Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian forward who recently departed Liverpool as a free agent. According to the club's statement filed on Turkey's public disclosure platform, Salah was expected to travel to Istanbul for medical examinations on Wednesday, followed by a move to Trabzon to finalize terms with the Black Sea club. Trabzonspor Chairman Ertugrul Dogan indicated to broadcaster A Spor that while the transfer remained incomplete, contract signing was likely to occur on Thursday, though he did not provide a definitive timeline.
Salah's nine-year tenure at Liverpool concluded this summer following a distinguished period in which he scored 257 goals across 442 appearances. During his time at the English club, he secured two Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League trophy. In the 2024-25 season, Salah achieved 29 Premier League goals and 18 assists, equalling the league record for goal involvements in a single season and setting the mark for a 38-game campaign. He was subsequently awarded Premier League Player of the Season, the Golden Boot, and the Playmaker Award, becoming the first player to claim all three accolades in one campaign.
However, Salah's performance declined in the preceding season, recording seven goals and seven assists across 27 league matches. His reduced output and subsequent benching in Champions League fixtures led to a public disagreement with Liverpool manager Arne Slot. The 34-year-old began his European career at Swiss club Basel in 2012 before joining Chelsea, with subsequent brief stints at Fiorentina and AS Roma between 2015 and 2017.
Trabzonspor, positioned as Turkey's fourth-largest club behind Istanbul-based Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, and Besiktas, finished third in the Super Lig last season and qualified for the Europa League playoff round. Salah had previously been linked with Istanbul club Besiktas, but negotiations stalled over financial and image-rights considerations, according to local media reports.
