How Israeli restrictions on Palestinians’ movement break up the West Bank

Israeli military and administrative measures have progressively restricted Palestinian movement throughout the West Bank over the past six decades, fundamentally altering the geography and accessibility of the territory. What once constituted straightforward journeys between Palestinian population centers has become a complex and often hazardous undertaking due to checkpoints, settlement expansion, and infrastructure development. A personal account illustrates this transformation: a journey from Jerusalem to Ramallah that required 20 to 30 minutes in the 1980s now frequently takes an hour or longer, as Israeli settlements have been constructed along traditional routes and military checkpoints have proliferated at access points. For Palestinians, the impact is substantially more severe, with movement restrictions taking multiple forms. These include stationary and mobile army checkpoints on major roads, earthen embankments blocking village and refugee camp access, and remotely controlled steel gates. A second category of restrictions requires Palestinians to obtain military permits to access occupied East Jerusalem and Israel, affecting those visiting religious sites or employed within Israel. A third category restricts West Bank Palestinians' ability to travel internationally via the Allenby Bridge crossing into Jordan. Movement restrictions have intensified significantly following the October 2023 Hamas attacks on southern Israel, with cumulative effects fragmenting Palestinian society and limiting economic and social mobility.
