DOJ sends monitors to Michigan poll sites as lawmakers warn of partisan aim

The US Department of Justice announced the deployment of federal monitors to polling locations in four Michigan cities—Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing, and East Lansing—during the state's primary election. According to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, the monitors were stationed to "ensure free and fair elections nationwide" and to maintain uniform, nondiscriminatory oversight.

The DOJ's election monitoring programme has operated for decades as a mechanism to ensure compliance with federal civil rights laws. However, lawmakers and advocacy groups have raised concerns about how such oversight could be utilised under the current administration, particularly given the Trump administration's long-standing, unsubstantiated claims of widespread election fraud in US elections. The President has repeatedly alleged fraud without evidence and has not acknowledged his 2020 electoral loss.

The Michigan deployment represents part of a broader monitoring initiative announced weeks earlier, covering 15 jurisdictions across six states including Arizona, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Virginia. The DOJ indicated plans to expand monitor usage leading into the November general election. The department did not provide specific reasons for selecting the four Michigan cities, though three of them—Detroit, Lansing, and East Lansing—are heavily Democratic-leaning, while Hamtramck, the nation's first Muslim-majority city, has historically favoured Democrats but has shifted increasingly Republican in recent years.

Michigan voters were casting ballots to select party nominees for local, state, and congressional races ahead of November's midterm election. Notable contests included a competitive Democratic Senate race and gubernatorial races on both sides of the political spectrum.
