Iran says negotiations with Oman over Strait of Hormuz in final stages

Iran and Oman are advancing toward a settlement regarding maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil shipping corridors. According to Iran's foreign ministry, the two nations are close to establishing an alternative route that differs from existing northern and southern passages, designed to protect each country's territorial interests and security concerns.

The Strait of Hormuz, bordered by both Iranian and Omani waters, typically handles approximately one-fifth of global oil shipments. Iran has effectively controlled the waterway since the outbreak of regional conflict, following military strikes in late February targeting Iran's missile capabilities. A ceasefire agreement reached in June collapsed within weeks over disagreements regarding shipping routes, leading to renewed hostilities in July.

Iranian officials have characterized the proposed route as separate from broader questions about whether the strait remains closed or reopened. They attribute the current closure to what they describe as American policy breaches, naval blockades, and hostile measures. Diplomatic efforts continue, with Iranian parliamentary officials indicating that mediators are attempting to revive earlier agreements and that further delegations to Muscat remain possible.

These negotiations occur amid broader regional tensions. The United States and Israel recently announced a pause in military operations against Iran, contingent on rapid progress toward a conflict resolution agreement. The Strait of Hormuz remains a central point of contention in ongoing diplomatic discussions.
