Ukrainian drone attacks kill eight in response to Russian missiles

Ukraine has conducted extensive overnight drone operations targeting Russian infrastructure across multiple regions, resulting in confirmed civilian casualties and damage to strategic facilities. According to regional governors, at least eight people were killed in the strikes, including three fatalities in the Udmurtia region from a drone strike on a vehicle located over 1,300 kilometers from the Ukrainian front line. The acting governor of Udmurtia characterized the attack as senseless and noted that the victims were not military targets.

Ukrainian military forces confirmed strikes against several significant Russian installations. The Saratov oil refinery, a major petroleum processing facility, sustained damage and fires as a result of the attack. The Engels airbase, which houses strategic bomber aircraft, also caught fire following the strike. Additionally, Ukrainian forces targeted an oil depot in the Kaluga region. These attacks represent part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to degrade Russia's economic and energy infrastructure in an effort to constrain Moscow's capacity to sustain military operations.

The scope of Ukrainian drone operations has expanded considerably, with attacks reaching targets hundreds of kilometers from the front lines. Ukrainian forces have also targeted Wildberries facilities, a major Russian e-commerce platform, in approximately a dozen strikes since mid-July as part of efforts to disrupt the civilian economy. Russia reported intercepting 635 drones during the overnight operation, though Ukrainian strikes still achieved their intended effects.

In Ukraine, Russian attacks continued to inflict civilian casualties. A guided bomb strike on a residential building in Zaporizhzhia killed one person, while another attack on Kharkiv killed one person and ignited a postal facility. The escalating campaign reflects a broader pattern in which both nations increasingly employ long-range missiles and drones to strike targets deep within enemy territory. Russian missile strikes have intensified significantly, with 376 missiles fired at Ukraine in July alone—more than double the June total—resulting in over 170 civilian deaths according to UN figures.
