Pathirage beats Chopra and Nadeem to win Commonwealth gold in javelin

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage secured Sri Lanka's first Commonwealth Games gold medal in athletics by winning the javelin final at the 2026 Games in Glasgow. The 23-year-old's winning throw of 89.75 metres proved decisive despite challenging conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, where he managed only one successful throw in his first five attempts.

Pathirage's victory came against a formidable field that included two of the sport's dominant competitors. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, the defending Commonwealth champion and 2024 Olympic gold medallist, unexpectedly exited the competition after three throws. Neeraj Chopra of India, long considered among the world's elite javelin throwers, secured silver with a season-best throw of 85.83 metres, while his Indian teammate Yash Vir Singh claimed bronze with a personal best of 85.41 metres.

The competition featured several athletes with impressive career credentials. Five finalists had previously thrown beyond 90 metres, including world champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, who finished sixth with 82.55 metres after struggling with his opening throws.

Pathirage's athletic journey began in cricket, where he competed as a fast bowler and achieved speeds of 134 kilometres per hour as a teenager. His transition to javelin has proven remarkably successful, establishing him as a significant competitor in international athletics.
