Howe exits Newcastle on Premier League season eve, with Al-Ahli boss touted

Eddie Howe has departed his position as Newcastle United manager effective immediately, ending a five-year tenure at the English Premier League club. The 48-year-old's exit comes approximately four weeks before the start of the new season, following discussions with Newcastle's leadership over the preceding two days. During his time at the club, Howe achieved significant milestones, including securing Newcastle's first major domestic trophy in seven decades through the League Cup victory in 2025 and guiding the team to Champions League qualification in both 2023 and 2025.

Howe's final season proved disappointing, with Newcastle finishing 12th in the Premier League table after accumulating 17 defeats across 38 matches. His last match in charge was a pre-season friendly that ended in a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City.

Matthias Jaissle, a 38-year-old German coach currently leading Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, has emerged as the primary candidate to succeed Howe. Jaissle brings managerial experience from his tenure at Red Bull Salzburg, where he spent two seasons before joining Al-Ahli in 2023. Both Newcastle and Al-Ahli share common ownership through Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which may facilitate the transition.

Newcastle faces an immediate challenge, with their Premier League campaign set to commence against Liverpool at home on August 23. The club has also experienced player departures during the transfer window, including Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, with speculation surrounding captain Bruno Guimaraes' future.
