FIFA charges Argentina after World Cup final brawl with Spain

FIFA initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against Argentina on multiple fronts stemming from World Cup conduct. Two Argentina players face assault charges related to altercations that occurred immediately after Spain's 1-0 victory in the final on July 19. Midfielder Leandro Paredes was charged with three counts of assault, while defender Nahuel Molina received two assault charges. Additionally, an assistant coach was charged with alleged assault following the final match.

Beyond the post-match incidents, FIFA charged Argentina's football federation for a political demonstration. Players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" following Argentina's 2-1 semifinal victory over England. FIFA classified this action as using a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations. The Falkland Islands, known as Islas Malvinas in Argentina, were the subject of a 1982 military invasion that sparked a 10-week conflict ultimately won by Britain.

The disciplinary cases also encompass additional violations. Charges were filed for discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters, unsporting conduct by multiple players, and spectator misconduct including object-throwing during various tournament matches. FIFA stated that all charged parties have been afforded the opportunity to present their defense, with final determinations to follow from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
