Online scam centres fuelling human trafficking worldwide, warns UN agency
The International Organization for Migration warns that online scam centres have become one of the world's fastest-growing forms of human trafficking. Approximately 300,000 workers across South-East Asia operate scam centres that lure victims from over 80 countries through fake job offers, generating annual global losses between $88 billion and $114 billion.
Human trafficking networks operating through online scam centres represent an accelerating global threat, according to the International Organization for Migration. These criminal operations, concentrated across South-East Asia in countries including Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, employ hundreds of thousands of workers who orchestrate fraudulent schemes targeting vulnerable populations worldwide.
The networks employ increasingly sophisticated recruitment tactics, targeting educated jobseekers through social media platforms with fabricated employment opportunities. Victims selected for their language proficiency and educational credentials are deceived into travelling to Asia-based compounds, where their documents are seized and they face physical and psychological coercion. The operations function as highly organised enterprises generating substantial criminal profits.
According to recent estimates from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, these scam operations generated between $88 billion and $114 billion in annual global losses. The IOM has provided assistance to over 3,500 survivors from 33 countries, many of whom endure extended periods of captivity and return home traumatised, financially devastated and struggling with reintegration.
The IOM emphasises that survivors are frequently criminalised rather than recognised as trafficking victims. The organisation calls for enhanced international cooperation, prevention initiatives and public education to dismantle trafficking networks and protect potential victims from deceptive recruitment schemes.
