The election of Khalil al-Hayya as Hamas leader has generated mixed responses among Palestinians in Gaza, with residents expressing more pressing concerns about daily survival than political leadership changes. According to Al Jazeera reporting, many inhabitants face severe hardships including destroyed homes, food insecurity, and lack of access to clean water following the conflict that began in October 2023.
Noman Saleh, a 63-year-old who lost his factory during the war, expressed frustration with all political factions, stating that leadership changes offer little practical benefit to ordinary people suffering from hunger and humiliation. Similarly, Ali Abu Amshi, 28, who lost 22 family members and was displaced from his home, indicated that political news holds minimal significance for residents focused on basic survival needs such as food, water, and reopened border crossings.
Palestinian journalist Mahmoud Haniyeh offered a different perspective, characterizing al-Hayya's election as a significant political statement reflecting Hamas's commitment to maintaining continuity in leadership and decision-making direction. Haniyeh noted that al-Hayya's selection carries symbolic weight given his involvement in the movement's leadership circle.
