Andy Burnham pledges end to political instability as he becomes UK PM

Andy Burnham assumed office as UK prime minister on Monday following his meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. His appointment marks the seventh change in prime ministerial leadership within a decade, reflecting ongoing political turbulence in British governance.

Burnham replaced Keir Starmer, who was removed from office approximately two years after securing a landslide election victory. Starmer's departure occurred amid significant electoral gains by populist forces, particularly Reform UK, which now leads in polling ahead of the next national election scheduled for 2029.

Upon arriving at 10 Downing Street, Burnham outlined his vision for stabilizing the country. He stated that Britain must demonstrate its capacity to regain stability and acknowledged that the nation has underperformed, requiring substantial improvement. The former mayor of Greater Manchester expressed frustration with the revolving door of leadership and called for reflection and renewed commitment in British politics.

Burnham announced plans for transformative change, declaring his intention to implement the largest policy shifts in four decades, including new political and economic models. He promised to provide Britons with immediate relief and indicated that measures addressing the cost of living would be announced within the week. His first directive will focus on eliminating rough sleeping across the country, with a comprehensive 10-year plan to follow later in 2026.

On foreign policy, Burnham signalled continuity with previous commitments, stating that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be among his first contacts with foreign leaders. He pledged unwavering British support for Ukraine and indicated an early conversation with US President Donald Trump. Burnham is expected to announce senior cabinet appointments shortly, with particular attention to selecting a replacement for Rachel Reeves as finance minister.
