Palestinian teenage footballer dies a week after Israeli settler attack
Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan, a 17-year-old Palestinian footballer on the national youth team, died from gunshot wounds sustained during an Israeli settler attack on his West Bank village on July 11. His death marks the 1,013th casualty from the Palestinian sports movement since October 7, 2023, according to the Palestine Football Association.
A Palestinian teenager representing his country's national youth football squad has succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent assault on his West Bank village. Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan, 17, was shot on July 11 during an attack by Israeli settlers and forces. He was struck in the thigh, requiring amputation of his leg, and died from complications of his injuries on Saturday. His body was carried by mourners from a medical facility in Ramallah to his home village of al-Mughayyir for burial.
According to the Palestine Football Association, Israeli forces fired the shot that wounded al-Nassan while settlers were actively attacking the village. His father recounted that the teenager ran toward the scene after hearing women and girls screaming during the assault. Family members described him as a dedicated student and athlete who was well-liked in his community.
The incident reflects an ongoing pattern of violence affecting Palestinian communities across the occupied West Bank. On the same day as al-Nassan's death, Israeli settlers and forces carried out additional attacks, including setting fires to Palestinian property in separate incidents near Ramallah and Nablus. In one location west of Ramallah, Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition and tear gas at Palestinian farmers, igniting fires that spread through olive groves while civil defence crews were prevented from accessing the area. In another incident near Nablus, settlers set fire to a family home, destroying it entirely.
These attacks are part of what residents describe as a near-daily cycle of incursions and settler violence. On the same day, Israeli forces also conducted home raids in towns near Jenin, continuing a pattern of military operations across the territory. The Palestine Football Association noted that al-Nassan's death brings the total number of casualties from the Palestinian sports movement to 1,013 since October 7, 2023, with 568 of those from the Palestinian football community.
