FIFA World Cup 2026 sees major increase in goals from outside the box

Bell summary

The proportion of goals scored from outside the penalty box at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America has doubled to 16 percent compared to 8 percent at the 2022 Qatar tournament. FIFA's Technical Study Group attributes this increase to teams defending deep, forcing forwards to attempt long-range shots, with experts noting improved shot quality.

The full story

The 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America has witnessed a notable shift in scoring patterns, with long-range goals becoming significantly more prevalent than in previous tournaments. According to FIFA's Technical Study Group, goals from outside the penalty area now account for 16 percent of all goals scored, a substantial increase from the 8 percent recorded during the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar.

Football analysts have identified the tactical reasons behind this trend. Teams have increasingly adopted defensive strategies that involve positioning multiple players deep within their own half, effectively congesting the penalty area and limiting space for conventional finishing. This defensive approach inadvertently encourages attacking players to attempt shots from greater distances, where they may find more room to strike the ball.

Jurgen Klinsmann, a member of FIFA's Technical Study Group and former US national team manager, explained that the crowded nature of modern defensive formations creates conditions favorable for long-range attempts. With eight or nine players occupying space around and within the penalty box, goalkeepers face additional difficulty in tracking shots from distance. Klinsmann noted that coaches have found this tactical evolution entertaining to observe, particularly when it produces aesthetically pleasing goals.

Arsene Wenger, FIFA's chief of football development, praised the technical quality of these long-range efforts. He characterized the shots as powerful and well-executed, describing them as "rockets" that demonstrated high levels of precision and technique throughout the tournament.

Argentina has been particularly effective in exploiting this trend, accumulating five goals from outside the box. Notably, Enzo Fernandez scored a spectacular long-range goal in the 85th minute of the semifinal against England, while Julian Alvarez added another from 22 yards during extra time against Switzerland. In the third-place match, England's Declan Rice also found the net from outside the box in the opening minutes of a high-scoring encounter.
