Bell summary

The full story

India has reached a significant milestone in its space sector development with the successful orbital launch of Vikram-1, a three-stage rocket developed by private company Skyroot Aerospace. The 22-metre vehicle lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and successfully deployed customer payloads into a 450-kilometre low-Earth orbit, establishing India as the third nation to achieve orbital launch capability through private enterprise.

Vikram-1 represents a substantial advancement over Skyroot's previous suborbital Vikram-S mission conducted in 2022. The new rocket can carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms and incorporates robotic arms designed to address space debris concerns. Beyond its primary mission objectives, the vehicle carried experimental equipment, a laboratory-grown diamond, and a miniature gold sculpture honouring India's national space programme.

Skyroot Aerospace, founded in 2018, has emerged as a leading player in India's newly liberalised space sector. The company achieved a $1 billion valuation earlier this year, reflecting investor confidence in India's private space capabilities. The successful mission validated critical systems including propulsion, avionics, telemetry, guidance, navigation and control mechanisms during flight operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterised the launch as a transformative moment for India's space ambitions, suggesting it will inspire young innovators to pursue ambitious goals. Skyroot has indicated plans for additional test flights before transitioning to routine commercial operations, positioning the company to capture growing demand in the global space economy.
