The full story

South African football has lost a young player following the death of Jayden Adams, a midfielder who represented both Mamelodi Sundowns and the national team at the recent FIFA World Cup. Adams, aged 25, appeared in three matches during South Africa's World Cup campaign, which concluded with elimination in the round of 32.

During the tournament, Adams demonstrated considerable personal resilience. His grandmother, Marianna, passed away the day before South Africa's 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic, yet Adams started in that match and also in the subsequent 2-0 loss to Mexico. He came off the bench in the 1-0 victory over South Korea and was an unused substitute when Canada eliminated South Africa on June 28.

South Africa's sports minister, Gayton McKenzie, acknowledged Adams's character and commitment. McKenzie stated that he had reached out to offer condolences when Adams's grandmother died, and was struck by the player's humble and appreciative response. McKenzie noted that Adams's decision to continue representing his country during such a difficult personal moment reflected exceptional maturity and professionalism.

Prior to the World Cup, Adams had contributed to Mamelodi Sundowns' CAF Champions League victory. He had previously played for Stellenbosch FC, and notably dedicated his medal from the Sundowns to a late Stellenbosch teammate, Oshwin Andries, who died after being stabbed in 2023.
