Injured Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback ends in defeat to Max Holloway
Conor McGregor's UFC comeback at UFC 329 in Las Vegas ended within a minute when he injured his right knee attempting a flying kick in the opening round against Max Holloway and was forced to retire. The injury marked another setback for the Irish fighter, who had been sidelined since breaking his leg in July 2021.
Conor McGregor's long-awaited return to professional mixed martial arts competition concluded almost immediately at UFC 329 in Las Vegas on Saturday. The Irish fighter sustained a right knee injury early in the first round while executing a flying kick against opponent Max Holloway. After landing awkwardly, McGregor attempted to continue but quickly signaled to the referee that he was unable to proceed, resulting in his retirement from the bout.
This latest injury represents another obstacle in McGregor's career trajectory. The former two-weight champion had not competed since July 2021, when he suffered a leg fracture against Dustin Poirier. A scheduled June 2024 matchup with Michael Chandler was cancelled after McGregor sustained a broken toe during training.
Meanwhile, Holloway indicated openness to a rematch once McGregor recovers from his injury. The pair had previously fought in 2013, with McGregor securing a unanimous decision victory. Holloway stated his intention to discuss future fight possibilities with the UFC organization.
In the co-main event at the T-Mobile Arena, British lightweight Paddy Pimblett achieved a quick victory over French opponent Benoit Saint-Denis, securing a submission win in under a minute.
