Indian cricket board to review T20 team’s ‘bad phase’ after England defeats
India's cricket board will conduct a performance review after the T20 team suffered five consecutive defeats across series in Ireland and England. The world champions, who won the T20 World Cup in March, face an unassailable 3-0 deficit in the England series with one match remaining.
India's cricket performance has deteriorated sharply following their T20 World Cup victory in March. The team has now lost five matches in succession, beginning with a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland before extending that poor run during their tour of England. In their most recent match in Bristol, India posted 158-7, which England successfully chased with nine wickets remaining and more than six overs unused. This loss came shortly after India were dismissed for just 76 runs in Nottingham, marking their heaviest T20 defeat by a margin of 125 runs.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has acknowledged the concerning trend and plans to address it systematically. Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board will convene a review meeting with core team members once the England tour concludes on July 19 to examine the underlying causes of the performance decline. Saikia characterized the situation as a temporary setback rather than a structural problem, noting that such phases can occur in international cricket.
Several factors have contributed to the team's struggles. Coach Gautam Gambhir has been managing the absence of key players including pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, both sidelined due to workload and injury considerations. Additionally, teenage debutant Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made his long-awaited debut at age 15, has yet to establish himself, recording scores of 14, 13, and 15 across three innings. India will face England in the fifth and final T20 match in Southampton before beginning a three-match ODI series.
