Dollar Near Six-week Low, Yen Struggles to Retain Intervention Gains
Currency markets showed limited movement on Thursday, with the yen struggling to hold gains from recent intervention and the dollar remaining near six-week lows. The dollar index hovered near 99.65, while major currency pairs including the euro, sterling, and antipodean currencies traded flat.
Global currency trading remained subdued on Thursday as participants assessed recent central bank actions and economic signals. The Japanese yen, which had benefited from intervention that pushed it to 155.20 per dollar on Monday, weakened over two consecutive sessions and settled at 157.71 per dollar in early trading. Despite giving back some of those gains, the yen remained substantially stronger than its multi-decade low of approximately 164 recorded in the previous month.
Other major currency pairs demonstrated minimal volatility throughout the session. The euro held steady at $1.1557, while sterling remained flat at $1.3469. The New Zealand dollar and Australian dollar also showed no significant movement, trading at $0.5885 and $0.7056 respectively.
The broader dollar index, which measures the US currency against six major trading partners, remained essentially unchanged at 99.65. The index continued to struggle for directional clarity while maintaining a position near its six-week low, reflecting ongoing uncertainty in currency markets.
