The fire occurred while le Clos was competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where he had just achieved a historic milestone. According to le Clos's account, the fire spread rapidly through his apartment block in the Sea Point suburb, leaving his home of more than a decade completely destroyed. The fire also claimed the life of an elderly neighbour, to whom le Clos offered condolences. Le Clos had set a Commonwealth Games record the previous day by winning bronze in the men's 4×100-metre medley relay, earning his 21st medal at the Games. The athlete indicated that his foundation would undertake fundraising efforts to assist other residents in rebuilding their homes. Le Clos, who won Olympic gold in the 200-metre butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics and holds four Olympic medals and 16 world titles, stated his intention to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
