Kosovo finds third wartime mass grave site as officials widen search

Kosovo's investigation into suspected war crimes from its 1998-99 independence conflict has expanded with the identification of a third potential mass grave site. Following the discovery of remains at a second location on Monday, authorities announced Tuesday that they were preparing to initiate excavation at the third site. The Special Prosecutor's Office cited the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation in declining to release additional details at this stage.

The conflict between ethnic Albanian independence forces and Serbian armed forces resulted in more than 10,000 deaths, predominantly among ethnic Albanians, and displaced over one million people. According to Kosovan authorities, the remains of approximately 1,600 individuals remain unaccounted for. Excavation efforts began last week in the Zubin Potok area, with the initial dig expanding as investigators determined that as many as 23 people may be buried in surrounding villages.

Recovered remains have been transferred for DNA analysis and identification, though prosecutors cautioned that this process could require several months to complete. Acting President Albulena Haxhiu characterized the discoveries as reminders of wartime atrocities and emphasized that locating all missing persons and holding perpetrators accountable remains essential to addressing the conflict's lasting wounds. Kosovo police have arrested three local men on suspicion of war crimes in connection with the investigation.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti suggested that the discovered remains likely belong to 23 ethnic Albanians who were forcibly abducted and executed in spring 1999. The ongoing search underscores the enduring impact of the conflict on Kosovan society and the continued pursuit of accountability for wartime crimes.
