Telegram says Apple suspension followed content norms violation by one user

Messaging platform Telegram experienced a brief removal from Apple's App Store globally after the technology company identified child sexual abuse material posted by one user. Apple confirmed the action, stating its review process detected content violating guidelines against such material. Telegram responded by promptly removing the content and banning the user responsible, leading to the app's restoration on the same day.

This incident echoes a 2018 suspension when Apple temporarily pulled Telegram for what founder Pavel Durov characterized as "inappropriate content." Following that removal, Telegram implemented enhanced safeguards to prevent recurrence. The platform now reports blocking nearly 338,000 groups and channels related to child sexual abuse material this year alone, maintaining a stated zero-tolerance policy.

The removal sparked criticism from technology industry figures. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, questioned Apple's enforcement consistency, noting that if a single user's illegal post warrants removing an app from a billion users, the standard would be impossible for any communications platform to meet, including Apple's own iMessage service. Telegram itself challenged Apple's approach on social media, questioning whether the same standard would apply uniformly across the App Store.

Telegram has faced ongoing regulatory scrutiny regarding illegal content moderation. Britain's Ofcom launched an investigation in April into child sexual abuse material sharing on the platform, which Telegram categorically denied. Australia's online safety regulator fined Telegram in February for delayed responses to inquiries about measures addressing child abuse and violent extremist content.
