From Trump to El-Sayed: US Arabs in Michigan centre Palestine in politics

Arab American communities in Michigan, particularly in Dearborn, fundamentally altered their voting patterns in the 2024 presidential election by withdrawing support from the Democratic Party. Activists and political strategists within these communities cited the Democratic administration's handling of the Gaza conflict as the decisive factor. The Biden-Harris administration's continuation of military aid to Israel, combined with Vice President Harris's explicit rejection of an arms embargo, created an untenable situation for voters who had historically supported Democratic candidates.

Community leaders explained that the traditional "lesser of two evils" framework no longer resonated with Arab American voters facing what they characterized as a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Lebanon. Rather than supporting Harris, significant portions of the electorate either voted for alternative candidates, cast blank ballots, or abstained entirely. According to analysis of voting patterns in heavily Arab precincts in east Dearborn, approximately 45 percent voted for Trump, 29 percent for Green Party candidate Jill Stein, and 16 percent for Harris.

The Republican candidate's campaign actively courted Arab American voters through community engagement, including appearances at rallies where local Muslim leaders were invited to speak and a visit to the predominantly Arab Detroit suburb of Dearborn. Trump's messaging positioned him as a peace-oriented alternative, which resonated with voters seeking accountability for U.S. Middle East policy.

Since assuming office, Trump has permitted Israeli military operations to continue in Gaza and Lebanon while initiating military action against Iran, actions that have contributed to rising energy prices. Additionally, his administration has intensified enforcement actions targeting Palestinian rights advocates, including campaigns to deport noncitizen student activists engaged in advocacy work.
