The full story

Health authorities in Michigan announced the first confirmed deaths linked to a cyclospora outbreak in the United States. The two deceased individuals both had significant pre-existing health conditions and suffered from intestinal illness and severe dehydration before their deaths. While cyclospora-related illness is typically not fatal, this development underscores the need to identify outbreak sources and prevent further cases.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, an illness characterized by watery diarrhea, nausea, and gastrointestinal distress. Outbreaks of this disease are most common during late spring and summer months. Federal investigators have traced Mexican lettuce supplied to Taco Bell restaurants in five states as a confirmed source, though authorities continue investigating other potential sources.

The scale of the outbreak has grown significantly. As of late July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed over 6,700 laboratory cases nationwide, with more than 11,500 additional suspected cases awaiting confirmation. Michigan alone reported over 11,200 outbreak-linked cases, a dramatic increase from 461 cases reported just days earlier, with 193 hospitalizations attributed to the outbreak.
