Israel kills five in Gaza despite Trump’s Hamas disarmament plan
Israeli forces killed at least five Palestinians across Gaza in strikes on Sunday, two days after the US unveiled a 15-point roadmap for implementing a ceasefire agreement. The strikes included attacks on residential buildings in Deir el-Balah and Gaza City, as well as destruction of a medical supply warehouse.
Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip resulted in multiple casualties on Sunday, with fatalities reported in separate incidents across the territory. A residential structure in central Deir el-Balah sustained a strike that killed at least two people and wounded several others, while a separate strike on an apartment building in northern Gaza City claimed three additional lives, according to local authorities.
The timing of these operations coincided with diplomatic developments in the region. Two days prior, the Trump administration released a comprehensive 15-point plan designed to facilitate implementation of a ceasefire agreement established in the previous year. The plan outlined mechanisms for Hamas disarmament and Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.
Disputes over the agreement's terms remain unresolved. Hamas has indicated willingness to surrender weapons for safekeeping only after Israel ceases military operations and withdraws forces in accordance with the original ceasefire terms. However, Israeli officials have stated that no withdrawal from current positions will occur unless Hamas undergoes what they characterize as genuine disarmament.
Political responses to the US initiative have been mixed. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not publicly addressed the proposal, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir rejected it as unacceptable and advocated for continued targeting of Hamas leadership. Mohammed Dahlan, a former senior Fatah official based in the United Arab Emirates, reported that Jared Kushner, a senior adviser on the US initiative, indicated efforts to coordinate with Israel on halting Gaza operations, with ongoing discussions between Washington and regional parties.
Beyond the residential strikes, Israeli operations on Saturday destroyed a medical supply warehouse in central Gaza, creating a crater measuring approximately 20 metres wide and 10 metres deep. These attacks represent part of a broader pattern of continued military operations despite the diplomatic ceasefire initiative.
