New York Times reveals Trump administration subpoena over North Korea story

The Trump administration has issued a subpoena to freelance journalist Matthew Cole targeting his reporting on a covert military operation in North Korea, according to the New York Times. Cole collaborated with Times national correspondent Dave Philipps on an investigation into a 2019 mission involving US Navy SEALs landing on North Korean shores with the objective of planting electronic surveillance equipment. According to the reporting, the operation encountered complications when Navy SEALs encountered a North Korean vessel and engaged in gunfire.

FBI agents delivered the subpoena to Cole's New York City residence in February, and when he was unavailable, the legal document was forwarded to his attorney. The Times is providing legal representation through David A O'Neil, who has previously defended the newspaper in similar matters. O'Neil stated that Cole intends to defend press freedom and First Amendment protections against what he characterized as attacks from the current administration.

The Times spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander described the subpoena as part of a broader pattern of government pressure on journalists, calling the demand for source disclosure "brazen and illegal." The subpoena represents the latest in a series of aggressive legal actions the Trump administration has pursued against news organizations seeking to compel disclosure of confidential sources. Similar subpoenas were recently issued to Times journalists reporting on Air Force One security concerns, though those were subsequently withdrawn. The Wall Street Journal also received subpoenas in March related to Pentagon reporting on US-Israeli military operations.
