Greece battles raging wildfires as flames appear to ease in France

Wildfires across southern Europe present a mixed picture as containment efforts yield results in some areas while new threats emerge in others. Greece is currently experiencing a significant wildfire emergency, with flames spreading rapidly across multiple fronts near Porto Germeno on the Gulf of Corinth. Strong winds have driven the fire through coastal regions west of Athens, prompting authorities to evacuate approximately 300 people by sea and issue additional evacuation orders for surrounding communities. Emergency responders, including hundreds of firefighters supported by water-dropping aircraft and helicopters, are working to protect populated areas and contain the spread.

In France, officials report that major wildfire situations are stabilizing after more than a week of intense blazes. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated that fires are now under control nationwide, with the southwestern Gironde region returning to a more stable situation. The French Interior Minister confirmed that flames in Gironde are contained, while approximately 1,500 firefighters continue defensive operations in the southeastern Var department, where additional hectares of land have burned. Defensive lines established around major fire zones held overnight without additional ground loss.

Portugal's largest wildfire has been declared under control, and Spain's major fires are no longer advancing significantly, with most evacuation orders lifted. Spain continues monitoring several wildfire hotspots two days after the government ended its national emergency declaration. European climate conditions remain concerning, as the continent warms at more than twice the global average rate, creating conditions that leave vegetation increasingly susceptible to rapid fire spread.
