US military says F-35B jet fighter crashes in California, pilot safe

A US Marine Corps F-35B stealth fighter aircraft went down on Friday in the vicinity of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and was recovered in stable condition, sustaining only minor injuries that required medical evaluation and treatment at a local facility. Aerial footage captured by news helicopters documented a significant plume of black smoke emanating from the wreckage, which lay in an open dirt field. Emergency responders, including military personnel and firefighting units, converged on the scene. Fire retardant materials were deployed across the area, and crews used water streams to suppress flames at the wreckage site.

San Diego Fire Department personnel responded to contain a vegetation fire that ignited near the crash location. The incident occurred at a base historically significant in military aviation—Miramar formerly housed the Navy fighter pilot training program featured in the original Top Gun film and earned the designation "Fightertown USA" during its operational peak. The facility was transferred to Marine Corps control in 1996, at which time the naval training school relocated to Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada.

The F-35B represents one variant within the broader F-35 fighter jet family, distinguished by its engine capability for short takeoff and vertical landing operations. According to a 2024 Government Accountability Office analysis, the US military services collectively operate more than 630 F-35 aircraft. Individual F-35B units carry an acquisition cost of approximately $109 million. The broader F-35 programme is projected to reach roughly $2 trillion in total expenditure as the military procures over 1,800 additional aircraft and sustains operations across multiple decades.

This incident represents one of at least seven military aircraft crashes recorded within the United States during the current year, according to data maintained by the Flight Safety Foundation's Aviation Safety Network. A more severe accident occurred in June when a B-52 bomber crashed shortly after departure from California's Mojave Desert, resulting in eight fatalities.
