A suspected avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range has claimed the lives of at least four climbers and left ten mountaineers unaccounted for. Pakistani authorities have recovered four bodies, though identities have not been disclosed. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the climbing expedition, led by renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, lost all communication following the avalanche event. Rescue operations are ongoing despite challenging weather conditions, with search teams focusing on remote and difficult areas where the remaining six climbers may be located. The expedition comprised climbers from multiple nations, including five Nepalese mountaineers, Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, an Omani climber identified as Nathira, American climber Mallory Geis, a Chinese climber, and two British nationals. Helicopter support and available rescue resources are being mobilized as weather and operational conditions permit. China's foreign ministry indicated willingness to assist Pakistan in the rescue effort. Purja, 43, is a celebrated mountaineer who completed ascents of all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in record time and achieved the first winter ascent of K2 in 2021.
