Spain PM to visit Ceuta after 19 migrants die breaching border from Morocco
At least 19 migrants died attempting to cross from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, with tens of thousands reportedly entering the territory in a 24-hour period. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the government would mobilise resources in response, and is expected to visit Ceuta alongside the Interior Minister.
A significant migration surge into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta resulted in at least 19 deaths, according to authorities. The crossing attempt occurred over a 24-hour period beginning Thursday, with reports suggesting more than 40,000 people may have entered the territory by sea and land from Morocco.
Spanish leadership responded to the crisis by committing government resources. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced plans to visit Ceuta on Friday alongside Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to assess the situation firsthand.
Local officials characterised conditions as dire. A representative of a Civil Guard workers' association described the situation as a serious humanitarian crisis, noting that thousands of migrants, including unaccompanied children, were sleeping outdoors while others moved aimlessly through Ceuta's streets. Deaths occurred through drowning and in a stampede at Tarajal beach's breakwater fence, where Moroccan authorities had deployed water cannons to repel crossers.
Ceuta and Melilla represent the European Union's only land borders with Africa and regularly experience migration surges. A recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling that restricted immediate deportation of sea arrivals without due process was cited by local authorities as a potential factor, though Moroccan activists questioned whether migrants would have been aware of such legal changes.
France subsequently announced plans to strengthen border controls with Spain in response to the developments.
