The team, comprising climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, China, the United States, and another undisclosed nationality, has been out of communication since the incident. Rescue efforts are underway pending weather and operational conditions.
An avalanche on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan has left ten climbers missing, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan. The expedition was led by Nirmal Purja, a 43-year-old Nepali mountaineer who has gained international recognition for his climbing achievements. The team composition included five climbers from Nepal, one each from Pakistan, Oman, China, and the United States, plus one climber of undisclosed nationality. Since the avalanche occurred, all members of the expedition have been unreachable. The Alpine Club of Pakistan stated that rescue operations are being coordinated to mobilize helicopter support and available resources as soon as weather and operational circumstances permit. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, transitioned to full-time mountaineering and guiding in 2018 following his departure from the British military. He holds the record for summiting all fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres in the shortest timeframe, accomplishing this feat in six months and six days between April and October 2019. Additionally, Purja led a team of Nepalese climbers in completing the first winter ascent of K2 in 2021.
