Nepal’s PM urges calm as three people killed after Hindu-Muslim unrest

Clashes between Hindu and Muslim communities in Nepal's south have resulted in three fatalities, triggering a rare public address from Prime Minister Balendra Shah. The Prime Minister, who has maintained a low public profile since assuming office in March, used the occasion to appeal directly to citizens for restraint and responsible conduct as the nation works to overcome the current unrest.

The violence originated on Sunday in Sunsari district near the Indian border, stemming from a dispute during a Hindu religious procession. The disagreement centered on the playing of loud music and the display of religious flags. Police intervention to disperse crowds resulted in two deaths, according to police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle. A third fatality occurred Thursday during a subsequent protest in the neighboring Siraha district, despite curfew measures already being in effect.

Government authorities have extended curfews across Sunsari and adjacent districts to prevent further escalation. Shah's statement emphasized the need for cooperation from citizens, civil society, religious leaders, political parties, and media organizations to maintain peace and national cohesion. He committed the government to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation, with assurances that accountability measures would follow.

Police leadership has indicated their focus remains on restoring order while minimizing force. Officials report maintaining heightened alert status across field operations to protect public assets and prevent additional confrontations. The demographic composition of Nepal, where Hindus represent approximately 80 percent of the population, contrasts with the southern regions where Muslim communities maintain significant presence.
