Pakistan coal mine explosion kills at least 11, traps dozens

A catastrophic explosion at a coal mining facility in Balochistan province has resulted in significant loss of life and left dozens of workers unaccounted for. The incident occurred in Sorange, a remote location near the provincial capital of Quetta, when a buildup of methane gas triggered the blast. Of the 36 miners present in the affected section of the mine at the time of the explosion, 11 bodies were recovered within hours, while 28 remained missing as rescue operations continued into the evening.

Emergency response efforts have been mobilized to locate the trapped workers, with rescue teams operating at considerable depth within the mine complex. Provincial authorities, including the Disaster Management Authority and mine safety inspectors, coordinated the search and recovery operation. Officials acknowledged that while they remained hopeful of finding survivors, the likelihood of locating miners alive had diminished significantly given the circumstances and conditions at the accident site.

The incident underscores persistent safety challenges within Pakistan's coal mining sector, particularly in Balochistan where operational standards remain inadequate. Many mines in the region operate without sufficient ventilation systems, gas detection equipment, or other fundamental safety infrastructure. Workers and labour advocates have consistently raised concerns about mine operators' failure to implement proper safety protocols or provide appropriate protective equipment to employees. Despite these hazardous conditions and comparatively low compensation, thousands of workers in Balochistan depend on coal mining employment, as the province struggles with high unemployment and poverty rates despite being Pakistan's largest territory.
