India’s youth have broken Modi’s spell

A sustained youth-led protest movement in India has challenged the political authority of Prime Minister Narendra Modi through demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, a central Delhi landmark. The uprising succeeded in compelling Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to step down, though observers note this administrative change was not the movement's ultimate objective. Instead, the young protesters directed their collective anger at Modi himself, viewing the minister's resignation as a symbolic victory against concentrated executive power.

The protest distinguished itself through its radical decentralization and grassroots character. Rather than relying on professionally produced materials or centralized organizational direction, participants created placards from cardboard scraps and cheap markers, each bearing individual moral expression. Despite this heterogeneity in visual presentation, the movement maintained thematic coherence, with protesters systematically mocking and caricaturing the prime minister to undermine the carefully cultivated public image constructed around him over more than a decade.

According to observers, the uprising reflected deeper frustrations beyond material grievances. A remark by India's chief justice comparing unemployed young people to "cockroaches" served as a symbolic catalyst, highlighting broader concerns about institutional arrogance and the erosion of democratic norms. The movement demonstrated that contrary to assumptions about political indifference among Indian youth, this generation possessed clear understanding of power structures and constitutional dynamics, viewing the concentrated authority of the prime minister as the true locus of their grievances.
