German investigators find apparent motive after Berlin Pride attack
German prosecutors say they found a video on a phone in the minivan used in Saturday's Berlin Pride attack, in which the suspect pledged allegiance to ISIL. The 21-year-old suspect, Abdul Ballout, was killed by police on Sunday. The attack killed one person and injured 31 others.
German federal authorities have disclosed that investigators discovered video evidence linking the suspect in this past weekend's Berlin Pride attack to the ISIL armed group. The video was located on a mobile device found inside the rented minivan that was driven into the festival crowd on Saturday. Although the person in the footage wore a mask, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that authorities believe the masked individual is the suspect in question.
Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German citizen with Lebanese heritage, was fatally shot by police on Sunday after attacking officers with a bladed weapon. The attack itself resulted in the death of a 65-year-old Polish woman and left 31 people injured. Investigators recovered the video on the day of the attack and have been examining additional data storage devices discovered at Ballout's residence, which also contained links to ISIL.
According to Berlin prosecutors, Ballout had travelled to Lebanon in 2025 with intentions to reach Syria and join ISIL, during which he established contact with several individuals believed to be group members. A Lebanese judicial source indicated that Ballout received a three-month jail sentence for ISIL membership. Upon his return to Germany, he was detained and subsequently convicted by a juvenile court in May of planning a serious act of subversive violence, receiving a suspended sentence of one year and ten months.
