Zinedine Zidane named new France head coach following World Cup
Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as France's new head coach, succeeding Didier Deschamps following France's fourth-place finish at the World Cup. The 54-year-old former Real Madrid manager will begin his tenure with a UEFA Nations League match against Turkiye before hosting Italy at the Stade de France on October 2.
The French Football Federation announced on Tuesday that Zinedine Zidane will assume the role of France's national team head coach. The appointment follows the conclusion of Didier Deschamps' 14-year tenure, which ended after France finished fourth at the World Cup, losing 6-4 to England in the semifinal. Zidane, a former midfielder who previously managed Real Madrid, brings extensive experience at the highest levels of football. The 54-year-old is scheduled to begin his coaching tenure with an away UEFA Nations League fixture against Turkiye, followed by a home match against Italy at the Stade de France on October 2. Deschamps' departure came after overseeing 185 matches and securing 120 victories during his time in charge. Under his leadership, France won the 2018 World Cup, the 2020-21 Nations League, and reached the finals of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup. Zidane and Deschamps share a notable history, having been teammates on France's 1998 World Cup-winning squad at home. Zidane was instrumental in that victory and received the Ballon d'Or that year.
