Qatar’s Amir, UK PM discussed Gaza and Hormuz stability

Qatar's Amir and the United Kingdom's Prime Minister held discussions addressing several key regional and bilateral matters, according to statements from both governments. The conversation centred on the humanitarian and political dimensions of the Gaza situation, with both leaders expressing shared concern about the ongoing crisis. They agreed that their respective teams would coordinate efforts to advance a lasting peace settlement based on a two-state framework for Palestine and Israel.

Burnham opened the call by extending formal condolences to the Amir following the recent death of his father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The UK Prime Minister acknowledged the elder Sheikh's role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations over many years. In turn, the Amir congratulated Burnham on his recent appointment and expressed confidence in his leadership, while reaffirming the value of long-established ties between Qatar and the United Kingdom.

Defence cooperation featured prominently in the discussion. Burnham pointed to the successful operation of the Joint Typhoon Squadron in supporting Qatar's defence capabilities and indicated British interest in deepening military and security partnerships. Both sides also addressed broader regional security concerns, particularly the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to protect international commerce and stability.

The leaders underscored the necessity of sustained diplomatic engagement to resolve regional tensions. Burnham acknowledged the Amir's mediation efforts in pursuit of regional peace, while both governments committed to continued dialogue on Middle Eastern security matters. The UK Prime Minister also raised the situation in Ukraine, calling for a just resolution following what he characterised as Russia's illegal invasion.
