Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to visit the White House on Tuesday for a meeting with US President Donald Trump. The visit coincides with Zelenskyy's attendance at the funeral of US Senator Lindsey Graham and a scheduled evening meeting with the Senate, according to Reuters reporting.
The timing aligns with a Senate vote on Russian sanctions legislation that has been pending for months. If passed, the bill would impose 100 percent tariffs on goods from the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India. In a recent development, Trump has sought to add sanctions on Iran to the same legislative package, a move Zelenskyy has indicated he supports.
Recent military developments have linked the Ukraine and Iran conflicts. On Saturday, Ukraine attacked an Iranian tanker in the Caspian Sea, which Ukraine's ambassador to Israel identified as carrying drones and military components destined for Russia. Iran has indicated it will retaliate for the attack. According to commentary from former US ambassador William Courtney, Ukraine's actions against Iranian vessels align with broader US strategic interests while potentially complicating Ukraine's diplomatic positioning.
Relations between Zelenskyy and Trump have improved significantly in recent months following a tense exchange in February 2025. The two leaders agreed earlier this month to jointly produce Patriot air defence interceptors, a critical component for Ukraine's defence against Russian aerial attacks. Discussions are also advancing on joint drone production, with Ukraine currently on track to produce 6 to 7 million short-range attack drones this year compared to the Pentagon's planned cumulative order of under 200,000 drones by February 2027.
Meanwhile, fighting on Ukraine's front lines remains intense, with long-range strikes occurring almost daily. Russian strikes on eastern Ukraine on Monday resulted in seven deaths and more than 20 injuries, according to officials.
