New UK PM Burnham assures Zelenskyy of continuing Ukraine support

Andy Burnham, Britain's newly appointed prime minister, received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for what Burnham described as an intentionally symbolic first bilateral engagement with a foreign leader. The meeting underscored the UK's commitment to Ukraine's defence against Russian aggression, with Burnham stating the encounter was designed to communicate unequivocal British backing for Kyiv's war effort.

During the visit, the two leaders travelled to a naval facility in Portsmouth to observe training operations involving Ukrainian military personnel. These exercises focus on enhancing combat readiness and developing capabilities to counter Russian mine operations in the Black Sea, according to UK government statements.

A significant element of the bilateral engagement involved technology transfer. Burnham's office announced that Britain would grant Ukraine access to the intellectual property underlying its Stone Cloak electronic warfare system, a technology designed to jam Russian air defence mechanisms and prevent drone detection. This represents a deepening of defence cooperation between the two nations.

Zelenskyy has indicated interest in expanding the partnership further, expressing a desire to negotiate a substantial drone production and technology-sharing agreement with Britain. He acknowledged Ukraine's critical shortage of air defence systems, noting that Russia's capacity to manufacture advanced ballistic missiles necessitates urgent acquisition of defensive capabilities.

According to Downing Street, the UK's cumulative support for Ukraine since the conflict's onset in 2022 has reached 25 billion pounds, with 16 billion pounds allocated specifically to military assistance. Burnham becomes the fifth British prime minister to engage directly with Zelenskyy since the war began.
