Thank you, Qatar: A farewell from Malta’s ambassador

Simon Pullicino, Malta's ambassador to Qatar, has completed his posting in Doha and shared reflections on his time in the country. He opened his remarks by acknowledging the recent passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir, whom he characterized as a visionary leader who guided Qatar through a transformative period and established it as a respected international actor engaged in humanitarian work and conflict resolution.

Pullicino noted that during his tenure, he observed substantial development across multiple sectors. Qatar has made notable advances in economic competitiveness, infrastructure development, sustainability initiatives, education, healthcare, and sports—all contributing to progress toward the Qatar National Vision 2030 framework. These achievements left a lasting impression on the departing ambassador.

A central theme of Pullicino's remarks was Qatar's diplomatic approach and regional influence. He emphasized that Qatar and Malta share aligned foreign policy principles centered on multilateralism, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international rules-based frameworks. He highlighted Qatar's distinctive role as a mediator in regional affairs, citing its facilitation of agreements such as the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding and its sustained engagement in Gaza ceasefire negotiations when other diplomatic channels had stalled.

Pullicino also commended the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, noting that his principled stewardship of Qatar's foreign policy has earned international respect. He referenced Qatar's measured response during recent crises, which Malta had publicly condemned.

Looking at bilateral relations, Pullicino underscored Malta's valuation of Qatar as a strategic partner for regional stability and economic cooperation. He noted that the two nations marked the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations the previous year, marked by high-level visits, political consultations, the restoration of direct Qatar Airways service between Doha and Valletta, and expanding commercial and cultural exchanges. As an EU member state, Malta views deepened ties with Qatar in trade, investment, and cultural domains as mutually beneficial.
