Becoming the story: Injured journalists battle to leave Gaza for treatment

Photojournalist Mohammed al-Qahouji, a 40-year-old freelance journalist, continues to struggle with severe injuries sustained during an Israeli air raid on January 7, 2024. While reporting on body recovery operations in southern Gaza alongside Al Jazeera colleagues Hamza al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Abu Thuraya, an Israeli warplane targeted the media crew. The strike killed al-Dahdouh and Abu Thuraya while leaving al-Qahouji with life-altering injuries affecting his face, hand, and spine. Surgeons implanted titanium plates in his cheeks to repair facial damage, amputated one finger due to severe hand trauma, and he now experiences persistent numbness in his lower limbs that restricts his mobility.

Since the January 2024 incident, al-Qahouji has undergone more than 25 surgical procedures, yet medical professionals indicate he requires additional reconstructive operations and extended rehabilitation available only outside Gaza. The injuries have substantially diminished his capacity to work as a journalist, his sole income source, forcing him to weigh his desire to continue documenting events against the medical necessity of seeking treatment abroad. Living in a rented apartment after his original home was destroyed in November 2023, al-Qahouji expressed his aspiration to receive treatment and resume his journalism career.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate organized a sit-in at its Gaza City headquarters on Wednesday to advocate for medical evacuation of injured and ill journalists from Gaza. The gathering included dozens of injured journalists and displayed photographs of 263 media workers killed by Israel during the conflict. According to the syndicate's secretary-general Ahed Farwana, more than 40 Palestinian journalists currently live with serious war-related injuries or medical conditions requiring urgent attention.
