Israel arrests nine at Tel Aviv protest against West Bank settler violence

A demonstration took place in Tel Aviv on Saturday as hundreds of people assembled to voice opposition to settler violence and Israeli military operations in the occupied West Bank. The Mothers Against Violence protest group reported that more than 200 participants attended the gathering on Kaplan Street, organized by the left-wing Hadash party and allied groups. Police arrested nine individuals during the event, with protest organizers alleging that officers used force against demonstrators. Israeli authorities stated that the gathering lacked proper authorization and had begun to obstruct public order and block roadways.

The timing of the protest followed a significant escalation of violence in the West Bank. On Friday, approximately 30 settlers entered the town of Tal, adjacent to the illegal settlement of Havat Gilad, and attempted to break into residential homes. When residents confronted the settlers, gunfire erupted. According to eyewitness accounts and video evidence, a Palestinian man seized a rifle from a settler and fired it before being shot dead by soldiers. Three additional Palestinians were killed and four wounded in the confrontation. Two Israelis also died during the incident.

Rights activists documented a pattern of escalating violence in the region. One activist reported that settlers had set fire to a home in Tal the previous week with residents still inside, describing the evacuation as narrowly avoiding a tragedy. In response to Friday's shooting, the Israeli government ordered a broad military operation across the West Bank, resulting in the arrest of nearly 50 Palestinians in Tal and raids on approximately 70 homes. Palestinian organizations characterized these actions as collective punishment, noting that at least 80 Palestinians were detained across the West Bank following the incident.

Political analysts suggested the events may represent a turning point in Israeli public discourse. One analyst noted that video documentation of the attack had made denial difficult for the Israeli public and predicted the incident could reinvigorate liberal opposition movements, potentially shifting how Israelis discuss and frame settler violence.
