‘We have done it’: Joy as ‘Cockroach’ protests push India minister out

A youth-led protest movement in India has forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after more than a month of demonstrations centered on widespread examination paper leaks affecting millions of students. The movement, initiated through a social media post by activist Abhijeet Dipke, coalesced around the satirical 'Cockroach Janta Party,' a name derived from controversial remarks by India's chief justice comparing youth to cockroaches and parasites.

The protests escalated significantly following a July 20 crackdown in which police and paramilitary forces used tear gas and physical force against demonstrators marching toward Parliament, injuring over 100 people. Video documentation of the incident sparked nationwide demonstrations across major Indian cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Lucknow, drawing tens of thousands of participants.

Pradhan's resignation on Saturday represented a major victory for the protest movement, which had articulated several demands beyond the minister's removal. These included compensation for families of students who died by suicide related to exam cancellations and leaks, assurances against punitive action against protesters, and a formal apology from police and paramilitary forces for their actions during the demonstrations.

Following the government's acceptance of these demands, protest organizers called for demonstrators to return home peacefully. Participants expressed both satisfaction with the immediate outcome and determination for broader systemic reform, with some emphasizing that the resignation alone was insufficient without comprehensive changes to governmental structures and accountability mechanisms.
