Wildfires in Spain and France force evacuation of 200,000 people

Wildfires spreading across Spain and France have triggered one of the region's largest evacuation operations in recent memory. In Spain, a major blaze near Madrid has merged with other fires and threatens to combine with additional blazes in the neighbouring Castilla y Leon region. Spanish emergency officials acknowledged that the wildfire near the capital has exceeded firefighters' containment capacity, with erratic wind patterns posing an ongoing threat to control efforts. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was scheduled to visit the fire zone and address the situation.

France faces similarly severe conditions, particularly in the southwestern regions around Bordeaux. Authorities evacuated thousands from suburbs near the city as fires showed no signs of diminishing. The Cap Ferret peninsula south of Bordeaux, home to upscale residences, saw approximately 44,000 residents flee as the only road became threatened by flames. More than 50 houses on the peninsula have been destroyed, with evacuation efforts including both vehicle transport and boat operations.

According to French officials, more than 141,000 people have been evacuated from the Gironde and Landes regions, while Spanish authorities reported 25,000 evacuations in the Madrid region, including over 1,200 elderly and disabled individuals. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu characterized the fires as reaching unprecedented levels. The French military has been deployed to assist, and President Macron requested European Union support.

Experts attribute the severity of this year's wildfire season to drought conditions linked to human-driven climate change, compounded by multiple heatwaves affecting European regions since May.
