Spanish police accuse tractor driver of sparking wildfire as blazes spread
Spanish police arrested a tractor driver accused of sparking a wildfire that has displaced tens of thousands near Madrid, as Spain declared its first national wildfire emergency. Over 100,000 people have been forced to evacuate across Spain and France due to heatwave-driven fires.
Spanish authorities arrested a man operating farm machinery in connection with a major wildfire that has driven mass evacuations across central Spain. The arrest occurred as the fire merged two separate blazes west of Madrid into a single conflagration that has consumed 30 square kilometers and officials have characterized as the worst in the region's history. Police indicated a second suspect is under investigation for a similar incident. Authorities had previously prohibited the use of farm machinery and related activities due to extreme fire conditions.
The wildfire prompted Spain to declare its first national emergency response to such a disaster. Approximately 40,000 residents in areas west of the capital have been ordered to evacuate or shelter indoors. Madrid's regional emergency management chief stated the fire had reached peak intensity and exceeded firefighters' containment capacity. A separate blaze in Avila province has burned 90 square kilometers and displaced roughly 1,500 people. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced his government had mobilized all available resources to address what he described as a dramatic situation spreading beyond Spain's borders.
France faces similarly severe conditions with multiple active fires. One blaze has swept through the Cap Ferret Peninsula, burning approximately 125 square kilometers and forcing around 44,000 evacuations in the Gironde department, with some residents evacuated by boat. A second fire in the Landes region has displaced approximately 23,000 additional people. French authorities have requested European Union assistance as fires burn on two fronts in the southwest. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported 32 active wildfires across France, with more than 50,000 hectares burned since January—nearly triple the previous year's total.
The European Union has deployed water-bombing aircraft to both nations, with Italy, Greece, Croatia, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia pledging additional support. The World Health Organization's European office noted that land burned by wildfires across the continent has increased 57 percent over four years, with fires in Spain and Portugal more than doubling compared to the previous year.
