US school shooter pleads guilty in Georgia following father’s conviction

A teenager has entered guilty pleas to 55 criminal charges stemming from a school shooting in Georgia last year. The defendant, Colt Gray, admitted to the attack on Apalachee High School on September 4, 2024, which resulted in four deaths and ten additional injuries. The victims included two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, along with teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie.

The guilty plea came several months after Colt Gray's father, Colin Gray, was convicted on charges related to his role in facilitating the attack. Colin Gray had provided his then-14-year-old son with the assault-style rifle used in the shooting, despite being aware of the teenager's deteriorating mental health. During Colin Gray's trial, investigators testified that he failed to secure the weapon or seek appropriate mental health intervention for his son, despite warnings from family members.

The case has drawn significant attention to parental responsibility in school shootings. Breanna Schermerhorn, mother of one of the deceased students, addressed the court and expressed that while adults in Colt Gray's life had overlooked warning signs, the teenager bore ultimate responsibility for his actions. She stated that her son deserved a future that was taken from him.

Investigators discovered materials in Colt Gray's bedroom suggesting an obsession with Nikolas Cruz, who carried out a 2018 mass shooting at a Florida high school. The guilty plea means Colt Gray faces a minimum sentence of life imprisonment. Before accepting the plea, the judge conducted a thorough questioning to confirm the defendant understood the consequences and was entering the plea voluntarily.
