Romanian jet fighter shoots down suspected Russian drone

Romania successfully intercepted and destroyed a suspected Russian drone that entered its airspace, an event President Nicusor Dan identified as the first such interception since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine commenced. The incident occurred on Friday when a Romanian F-16 fighter jet engaged the target with an air-to-air missile, downing it over unpopulated terrain near the village of Padina. Two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets deployed to Romania under NATO's air policing mission assisted two Romanian F-16s in the operation. No casualties or injuries resulted from the engagement.

Romania's Ministry of National Defence detected the drone approximately 20 kilometres east of the Black Sea port of Sulina before it crossed into national airspace, travelling through Braila, Fetesti, and Buzau county. A Romanian military source indicated that Russia was the suspected origin point based on patterns of previous regional incursions. The incident reflects escalating concern that Moscow's war on Ukraine poses risks of entanglement for neighbouring NATO states. Romania, an EU and NATO member sharing a border with Ukraine, has recorded dozens of drone incursions since the conflict began.

This successful interception follows previous incidents that heightened alarm among alliance members. In late May, a drone struck an apartment building in the city of Galati, injuring two people—the first such strike on a populated area within a NATO country. NATO and European Union officials condemned that incident, with the European Commission stating that Russia's war had "crossed yet another line." A month later, a Ukrainian sea drone exploded at the port of Constanta; Kyiv acknowledged launching the vessel but attributed its deviation to Russian jamming. The Baltic states have similarly reported repeated airspace violations, incidents that contributed to Latvia's government collapse in May. NATO Chief Mark Rutte characterised Moscow's "reckless behaviour" as a danger to all alliance members, while United States Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker pledged that the alliance would "defend every inch" of its territory.
